The Strokes
The Strokes are an American rock band from New York City, New York, United States, formed in 1998. The band rose to fame in the early 2000s as a leading group in garage rock/post-punk revival. The band consists of Julian Casablancas (lead vocals), Nick Valensi (lead guitar), Albert Hammond, Jr. (rhythm guitar), Nikolai Fraiture (bass guitar) and Fabrizio Moretti (drums and percussion). Upon the release of their debut album, Is This It, in 2001, the group was met with much critical acclaim, being hailed by some as the "saviors of rock and roll." NME made Is This It their Album of the Year. Since then, the band has maintained a large fan base, notably in the UK, US and Australia. As of 2007, Is This It has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide. They released their second album Room on Fire in October 2003, to good reviews, but to less success commercially, although it still went gold. The album's sound maintained the Strokes' familiar reference points, while also evoking groups such as The Cars, Bob Marley, and Blondie. In the process, they made the cover of Spin Magazine for the second time, with each member receiving his own cover. They also made the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time. Additional media coverage of the band came from the relationship between Moretti and actress Drew Barrymore, which ended in January 2007. In late September 2005, "Juicebox", the first single from The Strokes then unreleased third album, was leaked online, forcing the single's release date to be advanced. The single was then released as an exclusive on online download services. "Juicebox" became The Strokes' second UK Top 10 hit, as well as their second US Modern Rock Top 10 success. During November and December 2005 the Strokes did a promotional tour for the still unreleased album, which involved doing one-off shows in major cities around the world. Their third album, First Impressions of Earth, was released in January 2006 to mixed reviews and debuted at number four in the US and number one in the UK, a first for the band. In Japan it went gold within the first week of release. It was also the most downloaded album for two weeks on iTunes. Fraiture claimed that the album was "like a scientific breakthrough". In January 2006, the band then made their second appearance on Saturday Night Live playing "Juicebox" and "You Only Live Once". The Strokes' frontman Julian Casablancas and guitarist Nick Valensi started writing new material for their band's forthcoming new album in the latter stages of January 2009, which they were set to go in the studio to finalize in February of the same year. In February 2010, Julian Casablancas told NME that the band's fourth album was set to be released in September 2010. The release date has been pushed back again, and the album, titled "Angles" will now be released March 22, 2011 in America. The album's first single, "Under Cover of Darkness" was made available as a free download from the band's website on February 9, 2011 for a 48 hour period. The Strokes' fifth album is called "Comedown Machine" and was released on March 26th 2013 In North America and March 25th in the U.K. The first single is called "All the Time". I really got into The Strokes because of 'One Way Trigger' too! And also 'You Only live Once'. Julian is really great at writing catchy melody. But later I found out that 'One Way Trigger' is strangely similar to one Spanish song which I cannot remember...
I got into the Strokes completely arse backwards so I'm not your typical die hard Strokes fan and most Strokes fans will probably disagree with my opinions of them... I first heard 'Is this it' when it came out in 2001 and disliked it instantly especially 'Last Nite' as it was so overplayed and I completely wrote them off for years.About 3 years ago I heard a song which I just couldn't get out of my head in a shop, I looked up the listings and couldn't believe it when it was The Strokes as it didn't sound anything like what I remembered them to be...the song was 'One Way Trigger' from 'Comedown Machine' which was widely panned but I loved it.I then proceeded to buy and listen to the albums in reverse order figuring that if I didn't like 'Is this it' so much I'd be better off with their newer stuff first... I now love all their albums but I'm still not as keen on is this it ( I know this is sacrilege but hey). I love The Voidz album & Julians solo stuff too. Order of preference..1) Room on Fire -Strokes2) Phrazes For the Young - Casblancas3) First Impressions of Earth - Strokes4) Tyranny - Voidz5) Comedown Machine - Strokes6) Angles - Strokes7) is This It - StrokesI would be interested to hear how other people got into them..
They played at Mexican Fest called "LiveOut" in December 15th 2015, was amazing but i think the setlist was too "normal" except for 12:51 (played only time in 2015), i mean just 1 song from Comedown Machine (was Welcome to Japan)? Anyway was a great night full of classic songs and energy, i attach the setlist.
What do you think about it?
I found out about the band after I watched the 'Boombox' video by The Lonely Island which had Julian in it. After finding out he had a band, I first listened to 'Under Cover of Darkness' from 'Angles' back when it was just released. Then I decided to check out their songs from the very beginning so I listened to 'Is This It', then 'Room on Fire', then 'First Impressions of Earth'. I found it interesting how the sound changed so much over time, but my favorite album is still their first release and my all-time favorite track is still 'You Only Live Once'. I also listened to Julian's 'Phrazes For the Young' album around that time and gave some of Albert's songs a listen but I never finished any of his albums. When 'Comedown Machine' was released I was surprised at the direction the band took, but I still managed to find my favorites off that album too. I've also listened to some of the songs off the 'Tyranny' album but I haven't finished that album either.

Is this it (2001) - The best album in the last 15 years? Probably, along with Funeral by Arcade Fire (2004) and Oracular Spectacular (2007) by MGMT:)
To me they're an example of what can happen to a band when they're too-quickly and too-strongly hyped by the music press. It's hard to shoulder the burden of being labeled "the saviors of rock." I'd be surprised if any band could keep it together through the kind of pressure The Strokes were put under by the press.
That being said, I thought they still managed to save some face and make some great music well into Angles. The Comedown Machine felt particularly stale though. If I had to rank 'em:
1a. Room On Fire - This one just barely edges out "Is This It" for me. The tracks on this album have more muscle than on their debut while maintaining their signature swagger and those tightly-wound drums and guitars.
1b. Is This It - The classic, of course.
3. Angles - Though some songs on here work better than others, I thought for the most part the changes and retro-experimentation on this album worked well. I'd put many of the songs on here up with my favorites.
4. First Impressions of Earth - I feel like this album is really inconsistent. There are some good songs, but a lot of the songs feel kinda sluggish and meandering in a weird, disjointed kind of way.
5. Comedown Machine - While all of the falsetto was a welcome surprise, I found the songwriting overall on this album to be kind of boring and a little too 80's-flavored.
I feel that I was kind of tricked into liking The Strokes. I got into them when the first album came out and I was pretty blown away obviously cause its a great album. But after that their albums became kinda shit really with the odd good tune which led me to suspect that The Strokes were manufactured like a boy band. Comedown Machine was truly awful :D
My Ranking of The Strokes Albums
1. Angles (I know this will surprise many)
2. This Is It
3. First Impressions of Earth
4. Room On Fire
5. Comedown Machine
Since I've always considered myself a diehard Strokes fan, I'm curious to hear others here rank the albums by their opinions
