The older generation in Germany has too long a memory and a guilty conscience. Maybe the next generation can see WW2 for what it is ancient history. (Oops, I forgot about Neo-Nazi's maybe the Third Reich is not as dead as we would like.)
My mother was an English Gypsy who lived through the blitz (air-raids) in London and had relatives killed in the concentration camps. Her attitude was different from mine, but she learned to forgive and forget, making friends with a German woman her own age.
I dare say they would both hate Third Reich from the Sun, but not for lyrical content.
There are certain songs they are not allowed to play in Germany as well as certain merchandise they can't sell at shows. Germany can't take a joke :(
Hanzel and Gretyl - Third Reich from the Sun ? I cant imagene that song not being banned in atleast one place.
Talking of sabotage my fav track on that list machine head were also unlucky and had there promo for crashing around you affected by 9/11.
Good blog entry. The Beatles had several songs banned by the BBC effectively preventing them from being played on English radio. Most notably Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, because of the (capitalized) initials LSD! It was actually about a painting his son Julian had done in school and brought home. Julian confirms this and the painting is still extant. Lucy, Julian's lifelong friend, died recently in Liverpool.
Wow. I had no idea some of those songs were banned. This was a very interesting read. Thanks.
To contribute to the conversation, I'll bring up a song from relatively recent times: "Ich Tu Dir Weh" by Rammstein. ("Liebe ist für alle da, 2009)
Due to the sado-masochistic nature of the lyrical content of the song, the Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien (the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons) indexed the song, making it illegal to expose the song to minors. The rules for indexed material are as follows:
1.It must not be sold, provided or otherwise made accessible to minors.
2.It must not be displayed where it can be seen by minors. This would, for example, include playing an indexed game in the presence of minors.
3.It must be sold only within a shop. Basically selling indexed titles per mail order is illegal, however it is permissible if the package may be handed over only to a specified adult person, who has to present ID.
4.It must not be rented out, except in a shop inaccessible to minors. This is why most video rentals in Germany are not accessible for minors - otherwise they would not be allowed to rent out certain horror (and adult) films.
5.It must not be imported by mail order. In this case even an adult buyer is subject to penalty.
6.It must not be advertised or announced in a place where the announcement or advertisement could be seen by minors.
7.If it is for one of the above six causes, production, acquiring, and holding in store are subject to penalty too.
Rammstein consequently had to release a revised version of "Liebe ist für alle da," and the music video was only available on adult sites. The band was even prohibited from performing the song in concert; the lyrics were hence slightly modified to allow them to perform it. The decision has since been reversed (May 2010).
