I'm starting to build a pedal board for myself and I was wondering if anyone who played guitar had any suggestions for pedals I should buy or neccesities in setting up a board. So far I've purchased a ProCo Rat2 and Dunlop 535Q Multi-Wah Crybaby, I'm going for a sorta grunge/punk/ska sound for my music, the only band I can really use for a discription off the top of my head is State Radio.

you`ll probably need a Delay of somekind i recommend EHX ofcourse :D I Myself use a Memory Boy its relatively cheap and gives what i need. A reverb pedal could be good 2. Do you use the Wah alot and most importantly do you get good settings on it??? I got a old fashioned one (gcb95) , would be interesting to buy a wah where u can set q yourself.

I don't play guitar yet but I looked at a lot of effects and amp modelling hardware like POD Farm and such which might be a great way to experiment. Would anyone like to back me up on that?

I haven't actually gotten in my Wah pedal yet its still on order so ill let you know how it works when it comes in, but when i was comparing the two models the one where you set the q was only a little more expensive so i figured what the hell i might as well go with it. Now as far as the delay effects go do i need to buy a tempo pad as well? I was looking into buying a Boss DD-7 delay and after reading some reviews i found that some people used a tempo pad in addition to it.

Ok, a good choice! Well i guess a pad is good for keeping track of tempos, i dont have one if i get a real good setting i usually take a picture or a marker. :D

I would say OD, compressor, and delay is the foundation of any sound. Add chorus, reverb, termolo, pitch shifters etc. to suit your stye of music.

If you're still feeling out your sound i highly recommend the Line 6 units like the MM4 modulation and DL4 Delay. They give you models of about 20 popular pedals in each and you can quickly choose between 4 presets you set up. They are stereo in and out if you care about that. I actually found that the DL4 has a tube delay emulation setting which is really great for emulating a tube amp warmth. It's doesn't replace a real tube amp, but its great for practicing at low volumes or recording demos. I ended up getting two units for this reason alone.

For reverb i like the Boss RV-5. Full stereo, lots of sounds, tough unit.

Tube amp, save your self the $ and go with Tubes, I used to use solid state, yes they are reliable, but it is worth the warm sound that tubes produce

I'd highly recommend the Line 6 M9 as a good basis for the board; its the older line 6 units like MM4 and DL4 all in one unit. If thats too expensive then check out the M5 for a single effect. I use it in combination with a number of drive pedals and it serves all my needs for modulation and delay effects.

Having said that however if you haven't got a decent tube amp yet go for that first before filling your floor with effects. A good amp will make even a cheap guitar sound far better than any effect pedal ever will.
