Is this website free to use for everybody?

Can we finally get a straight answer from the moderators/owners of this website regarding this...

A few people on the forums have mentioned how they've been asked to pay to use certain features on this website. However, I have never been asked to pay any money to do anything on this website, and I've been here over twelve months, and I know at least two other people who have been here for at least as long as I have been, possibly longer, both also in the UK, who say that they never have either.

I've been sending a load of messages to people, but have received very few replies back. Could this be because some people have to pay in order to send messages? If so, what determines whether or not you have to pay to use this website? Your country of residence? Is it just new members?

this is powered by last.fm, yes? why not give last.fm subscribers a free membership?! sounds fair to me... :)

all you have to do is invite 5 fb friends to see your profile views/go incognito. just send 5 invites any time you want to see your visitors.

As a newer member that has the little box asking me to become a premium member to check who visited my profile, it's not really a big deal to be oblivious about it, unless one really wants to play that kind of game with strangers.

It would be nice if Tastebuds had some kind of shoutbox though, a-la last.fm, so it could become, for those who decided to activate it on their profile, a more group-networking oriented rather than 1-on-1 classic dating site. Oops, off topic. At least i hope it is and will remain off topic.

yes. I am all too aware of that.

tastebuds however has introduced as it goes along. most sites have this from the ok go.

i've been here long enough not to have to worry about it, so far. i'm sure in time something will happen where a fee of sorts will be introduced. that day I bid farewell.

Thanks for the input guys, we appreciate it.

We're still trying to find the right model for the site hence why we're experimenting with different premium feature sets.

@bourne_slippy premium features are very common place on modern consumer sites and social networks whether it's linkedin for careers, last.fm for advanced streaming (both of whom require you to pay to see who viewed your profile) or dating sites.

I can't believe that new members have to pay to see who looked!

shocking and certainly if I came along nowadays and had to pay, i'd be off in a heartbeat.

tastebuds you have to make up your mind and decide what sort of site you want to be?

Ah, that may be why I have 303 visitors then as i've linked this to Spotify... But as mentioned for the sake of a couple of ads (not too many though! Haha!) it would be a benefit to users old and new to see who is trying to connect with you, especially the new people who will more likely give up rather than pay a cover charge.

Or even if it's just a age/sex/location notification and marketed as 'Don't want the detective work? Then pay the charge and we'll do it for you!' sort of deal.

This site REALLY has the potential to get a good following if you took less of the 'We won't have corporate ads ruining our non conformist site' route (Hipsters - you know what I'm on about! Ha!). Sometimes a little corporate 'brown-nosing' is required these days!

But just think about it... It's crazy enough to work! :-)

No, it is completely free to send messages.

We have a couple of premium micro-features on the site. One of those is Incognito which is open to all users of the site. You may have had a notification about this when it launched. The other of those is Profile Visitors. When we introduced this we decided not to take it from existing users to reward them for being early users of the site. We offer newer users the change to get the feature for free by referring the site to others. We're constantly reviewing how these features work as we experiment with different models which is standard for a service of this nature at this stage.

No, we have never created any phoney profiles on the site. We try to make it easy for users to flag users which they believe might be fake. Profile views could come either from the site or from within the Spotify app.

On my Newsfeed it says in the top corner that 303 people have visited (You're probably right about the fake profiles) and when someone passes through, a notice appears saying 'Someone has visited your profile!' but when I click the box it takes me to the PayPal page. It used to say 'Someone has visited your profile 30 F London' so you at least had an inkling, but now its a complete mystery who has visited now... Messages are fine, I can see and chat, but if they are picking and choosing who can and can't have certain things, its not looking too good for them.

If indeed you have to pay for anything they seen you coming.

As for not being able to see who looked at you is a bit strange as you now get notifications of this actually happening and it also appears in your newsfeed.

The only feature that as far as I am aware you had to pay for was the 'voyeur' feature. (£1.99) This allowed you to look at as many profiles as you wished without anyone being aware.

as for the replies and so forth, it seems the norm. don't take it personally.

Interesting... So it tells you that somebody has looked at your profile, but doesn't give you a specific username or picture or anything else? You say 300 people have looked at your profile and you've only been here since March? That sounds awfully high... I've been here over twel;ve months and the toal number of pweople who have viewed my profile in that time is 59! I'm very active on the forums, and have messaged many many people... Call me cynical but could Tastebuds be creating one or two phoney profiles to make you look like you're having a lot of visitors in an attempt to make you spend your money? I have just looked at your profile, does it notify you of that?

Also interesting in that you're the first British user I know of who has been asked to pay... I hasve been a mewmber of the site for longer than you, so maybe there was a cut-off point and if you joined after that cut-off point, not all services are free of charge. Can you send and receive messages for free?

You're right, if Tastebuds let everyone use the site for free and made it's money through advertising, it would attract many more users.
