I'll start;
One of the Berlin School revival bands (https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/berlin-school/ ). Maybe not so unknown among enthusiasts of the genre, but it’s kind of a niche genre nowadays, far from its mid-70s popularity (Tangerine Dream’s Phaedra made it to the charts in 1974 and earned a few gold discs).
Public Practice
A rather cool post punk group out of Brooklyn that includes members of two other rather unknown bands Beverly and Wall. I saw them live in London in Feb 2019 and fell in love with them. Their front woman Sam (Samantha) York has great stage presence and their bassist/drummer (she switches it up playing live) Drew Citron has a great time on stage too. They had my #10 album of 2020. Their music has a bit of a Talking Heads sound with a female vocalist.
Margaritas Podridas
This is one of my favorite finds for 2021 so far. They're from Mexico and their self titled album is currently my favorite for 2021. I also love their 2018 first album Porcelain Mannequin. This song's title was my initial reaction to their new album.
Vomit Launch
A favorite band from the late 80's and early 90's. I was lucky enough to see them live a few times. They were based in Chico, California but made trips down to San Francisco to perform from time to time. They put on a great show, were relaxed on stage and fun to see. This song has one of my favorite titles.
Breech
I don't know much about Breech except that I love their self titled EP put out in 1999. I found them on mp3.com back in the 2001 timeframe and loved their song Awful Spill which will eventually show up on my profile when I post it as a favorite song. However I also love this one which is a favorite. I love the downbeat moody female vocals and music.
Josie Field
Josie might be more well known other places, but she is virtually unknown in the US. She's from South Africa and has 4 solo albums and 1 collaboration album. I really like or love all of them. I especially love a combination of the sound of her voice and her somewhat interesting vocal phrasing.
For those of you in the UK she is now residing there and has been playing in some bars and at some local festivals in Worcestershire, Pershore, Wiltshire and Knutsford the last few months.
20 Minute Loop
Here's another unknown artist from the San Francisco Bay Area. I first heard them on mp3.com back in 2000 and then saw them live shortly thereafter and loved them. I found their live show and the songs on their first three albums to be aural tapestries. I love the mixed male, female vocals on most of the songs and the harmonies of Greg and Kelly. Their voices go very well together. This is one of my favorite songs but not my favorite.
