About Also
There are obviously two bands named Also 1) ALSO is an indie/alternative rock band from Los Angeles, founded 2003 and still active to present. 2) ALSO is an inactive Gothic band from Germany that self-released cassette tapes and were featured on some reputable underground Goth samplers in the early 90s. You can use that other page to scrobble them: ALSO. 1) ALSO from Los Angeles, CA, is an alternative/indie-rock band founded in 2003 by vocalist/songwriter Drew Conrad, bassist Mark Zelen and drummer Scotland Stephenson. Despite being an unsigned and self-releasing band their latest 2011 release "Music Belongs in the Background" has charted on the CMJ Top 200, the premiere chart for alternative artists in the US and Canada. In August 2011 Emvy joined the ranks on keyboards, mellotron and effects which expanded the line-up to a four-piece. Their music is described by fans as "witty alternative rock" with a clear focus on lyrics of true-to-life subject matters "aimed towards rock fans that like to think and be challenged with themes that dig pretty deep." Their sound roots in British as well as American rock music culture. Bloggers, fans and critics alike compared them to bands such as The Smiths, Elbow, Jeff Buckley, The National or post-punk bands like Echo and the Bunnymen, The Church or Joy Division. According to vocalist and lyricist Drew Conrad their bandname Also implies possibility and open-endedness, it was chosen to be a constant reminder that there are many ways to look at any given situation, where there is unavoidably darkness, but also light. A short while after founding the band they self-recorded their stripped-down, lo-fi "Morning" EP at home in order to get some songs ready to be sent out to clubs and radio stations (it was self-released through download purchase at a later point of time). In the following years they received airplay on Los Angeles alternative stations, KCRW 89.9 & The Indie 103.1. Their forthcoming debut EP "send them off smiling..." charted in the Top 30 at over 25 stations nationally in the US. Given attention to their music while sitting at a coffee-house, best-selling thriller author John Skipp shot an independent low-budget video for the featured single "The Disappearing Heart!" and described their music "as good as f***ing songcraft can get". In 2006 they recorded their debut album "It Was Fine To Be Kind" including 12 tracks. The cover artwork was contributed by NYC-based illustrator Kim Rosen. There is a broad array of influences found in their music, perceptible by the audible crossover between genres, ranging from acoustic/singer-songwriter, chamber twee-pop, jangle pop, cathartic college up to ethereal ambient rock, which gives their music a certain appeal of post-punk. Additionally to the listing medley, this could make it harder for people on last.fm to not confuse them with the gothic band from Germany who are no longer active. By the end of February 2011 they self-released their sophomore full-length album "Music Belongs in the Background". The album's songs are dark and ethereal at times and wall-of-sound rock and roll at others. Tracks from the new album have been picked once again by various alternative/indie music and college radio stations. By the end of March self-released "Music Belongs in the Background" charted the CMJ Top 200. Nevertheless ALSO are still unsigned. Worthy of mention furthermore are their self-funded, independently booked and organized tours to the UK and continental Europe which first happened in 2005, and were then repeated three times.
