About Angel Romero
Angel Romero was born in Málaga, Spain on August 17, 1946. The youngest son of Celedonio Romero, he is a former member of the family's guitar quartet Los Romeros. Angel Romero made his professional debut at the age of six and at sixteen he appeared as the Los Angeles Philharmonic's first guitar soloist performing Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, in its first premiere on the west coast. As a soloist he has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, the New World Symphony, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He studied conducting with Eugene Ormandy, the conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra and has conducted for the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Royal Philharmonic, Germany's NDR Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Symphoniker, the Beijing Philharmonic, the Euro-Asia Philharmonic, the Shanghai Symphony, the Bogotá Philharmonic, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Orquesta de Baja California, the Santa Barbara Symphony, the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Chamber Orchestra. His recordings can be found on Delos International, RCA Victor Red Seal, RCA Victor Worldwide, Telarc and Angel/EMI. In 1991, at New York's Lincoln Center, he gave a world premiere of Joaquin Rodrigo's "Rincones de España". He performed the score for The Milagro Bean Field War, directed by Robert Redford in 1989 and composed and directed the score for Gabriele Retes' Bienvenido-Welcome in 1994, winning Mexico's 1995 ARIEL award. He can also be heard in Bill Conti's By the Sword score and acted in Taylor Hackford's Bound by Honor. In 1992 he performed a globally telecast appearance in the United Nations General Assembly Hall with the National Orchestra of Spain conducted by Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. Interestingly, in 2000 he was presented the Grand Cross of Isabel la Catolica and knighted for his musical accomplishments by his native country he fled with his family in 1957, during Francisco Franco's dictatorship. He received the Recording Academy President's Merit Award in 2007 by the Recording Academy. Angel Romero has a daughter Celina, a son in law John, and four grandchildren - Kate, Riley, Anna, and Jackie.
