Meet people through music
Eugenius was an important and influential "Pop Rock" band from Scotland, that existed from 1990-1995. Eugenius was a four person band, although the band members were changed several different times. The Members were: Eugene Kelly, Guitar and Vocals. Gordon Keen: Guitar. Andy Bollen: Drums. Joe McAlinden: Bass, Violin. Raymond Boyle: Bass. James seenan: Bass. Brendan o' Hare: Drums. Francis MacDonald: Drums. Roy Lawrence: Drums. Eugene Kelly recruited the band after the separation of "The Vaselines".The band was originally called "Captain America", but Marvel comics got involved and they were forced to change their name, to which they changed it to "Eugenius". (In addition, Eugenes' clever artwork skills were to fall out of favour with the department store chain C&A) Eugene didn't take the band seriously at first until the band Nirvana invited them to open dates on their 1991 European Tour. In 1991 Captain America (Eugenius) released an EP called WOW! on British Indie Paperhouse, then in 1992 they released their 2nd EP "Flame On" on Paperhouse Records. After Kurt Cobain's countless recommendations, and an often overlooked stint on the Creation Label, Eugenius attracted the attention of Atlantic Records and signed up with them. In 1992 they released their first album "Oomalama", which received fantastic reviews. But with their harmonic "Pop" sound they couldn't attract the thick guitar sound Grunge fans, regardless of Kurt Cobain's countless recommendations, Eugenius just wasn't as similar to Nirvana to attract much of their fan base, although they did attract numerous more fans than The Vaselines ever did. In 1994, Eugenius released their EP "Caesar's Vein", Which was quickly followed by their album "Mary Queen Of Scots". This time they received some light criticism, but were also praised. But they were not able to extend ther audience to a greater extent, and in 1995 Eugene Kelly disbanded Eugenius.
