About Hong Kong Blood Opera
The Hong Kong Blood Opera was formed in the city of Hermosillo, Sonora in the year 2006 as a result of former projects, such as the hardcore band "The Noise Cabaret" (2005-2006) and the experimental "... En La Orilla De La Utopia" (2003-2005), both bands integrated by most of the current members of HKBO. Coming from Hermosillo, a close-to-the-border town known for it's lack of musical movement other than traditional "banda" and "norteño" music, The HKBO along with other few punk, post-rock and electronic artists have initiated one of the most interesting underground scenes of independent music in the country, although in it's most it's usually ignored by national media. As a freshly created band, HKBO started with local and nearby appearances obtaining a positive response due to their unusual energetic live performances and despite their peculiar sound which involves several musical styles to which they simply define themselves as a Punk band. In late 2006 HKBO wins what would be the 'official and proper' mexican "Battle Of The Bands" (Rockampeonato) competing against 7000 bands from all over the country. The jury was integrated by some of Mexico's most renowned and legendary rock artists. The first and only prize was to sign a record deal with the main indie label in the country, Noiselab Records. HKBO goes into de studio in mids 2007 for the debut "The Critical Paparazzi EP" (Noiselab Records), produced by Yamil Rezc (Sub-División, Morbo) and which first single is "Killing Joke". It was officially released on september 5th, as a kick off for a 2-month national tour. Throughout 2007 HBKO PERFORMED as part of important musical festivals such as MX Beat where they shared stage with Dj Mehdi, Panico and The Whitest Boy Alive, and Motorokr Fest where they performed next to bands such as The Killers and Incubus. They were also the opening band for AFI's concert in Mexico City and have played along the country with Plastilina Mosh, Whitey, Zoe and División Minúscula. The Punchy-punk quintet was invited to the South By South West Music conference in Austin, Texas on March 2008, having perfomed at two International line-up gigs. During those presentations the audience and international press response towards the band was effusively positive. "Noisy electro-rock! HKBO are my new favourite Mexican band" Keytars & Violins Honng Kong Blood Opera: Favorite SXSW band by KVRX Student Radio "Mexican bands raised on American and British indie-rock of the `90s --with such names as Hong Kong Blood Opera [...]are making music that doesn't wear much Hispanic heritage on its hipster sleeve..."
