About Phono
There is more than one artist with this name. a) Phono (Pop rock, new wave): Phono is a Chilean band, formed by Ricardo Callealta (bass/vocals), Freddy Benavente (guitar/backing vocals), Gabriel Donoso (guitar) and Mauricio Martínez (drums). In 2004 they recorded they first indie EP, Florecer. The same year they signed with EMI Odeon and released their first homonym album, in may. Their first single "Florecer" was a hit in local radios stations, and gave them a nomination for the APES awards as Best Young Band. Their second album, Humana Tentación, was released in 2008. b) Phono (techno-industrial) Albums: Dementia, The Changeover. Still relatively unknown, Phono is also the project of Salt Lake City's Joe Ashton, who lists Nine Inch Nails, Stabbing Westward, Aphex Twin, Depeche Mode, and David Bowie among his influences. Phono's music is industrial, with complex harmonies and deeply emotional lyrics. The first album, Dementia, was a hit in the Salt Lake City area, but did not reach much farther-- it was introduced on mp3.com in 2002, later disappearing with the changes of the website. In the wake of Dementia, Joe Ashton became very active in the SLC club scene-- eventually exhaustion struck, followed by a dark patch of personal struggles. For several years the music was almost completely unavailable, apart from a few small clips on Phono's official site. In 2005 Phono finally released their second album, The Changeover, and Dementia is also in circulation once more. With the encouragement of his new wife, Joe Ashton entered a local contest, remixing NIN's 'Only'. Phono's 'phonoHipDestructMix' won, and in October of 2005 Joe Ashton met with Trent Reznor, who said "I'm telling you with completely no bulls--t that out of thousands of remixes I've heard, yours is definitely the best nationwide. Hands down, no contest. So thank you." c)phon.o This band has its own page, only mispelled tracks are identified on this one.
