I don't think the best guitar player of all time actually exists. Each genre boasts some amazing guitar players whose technique is often very different, but comparable in it's brilliance. In the context of a band, a great guitarist is often someone who doesn't dominate the music with blinding displays of technical prowess, but who listens and responds to the other musicians in the group and who knows how to create space within the music, as well as how to fill it. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that great guitarists aren't always technically brilliant, but musically creative and responsive. So yeah, I can't single out the best guitar player of all time, but I do have a real soft spot for John Fahey...
Good call on Joe Pass. I’d be certain you’ve heard it before, but ‘Guitar Interludes’ is a fantastic album.
Impossible to say, because there are so many great ones. But among my favorites are:
Jazz: Jim Hall
Soul: Mabon Teenie Hodges
Rock: Peter Green or Duane Allman
Blues: Blind Willie McTell, Magic Sam, Buddy Guy
