A song is only as good as its lyrics.

You can sing without words, or in a made-up language.
completely false for me, as many times i just need the melody :)
I don't even understand half of the lyrics in my collection, lots of foreign languages in there ^^
But I do like to search for translations, and occasionally translate them myself.
Knowing what kind of story is being told, or what kind of emotion was supposed to be attached to a certain song often makes it better in my own experience.
Great lyrics are always a huge plus for me, but there definitely are a lot of great songs with minimal to no lyrics at all.
Actually, with me, the beat/rhythm has to capture the ears before the lyrics. After all, half the time we mishear the lyrics. Anyone can write good lyrics but if the beat sucks, I pass. If the beat is good and the lyrics are great, then that's just a bonus. Great examples of awesome songs without lyrics - most instrumentals!
There exist an infinite amount of songs that contain crap lyrics, yet remain as great songs.
l have no need to provide examples, it's the truth, end of....
In fact, this just took on a extra level of cringe—the most recent post in the very next thread I opened featured you praising a Nirvana track as "just spectacular".
For all those people who only like top 40 music, Nirvana are a super-obscure band from the late 80s-early 90s who never, ever, ever appeared in the top 40, and whose music refused to conform to rules like having lyrics, vocals, or a verse-chorus-verse structure.
Define "good".
Also, English language songs probably dominate the world in terms of popularity, yet the majority of people don't speak English and therefore are unable to understand the lyrics in the most basic sense of the term. Are these people incapable of appreciating the "good"-ness of a song?
And why is Mozart a household name, but Schikaneder isn't?
That has nothing to do with the topic. A song is meant to be sung. If it has no words, it's a tune, not a song.
