Please, explain your recommendations. What do you like in a director's filmography or in a specific film ?
Anyone can give a list, but I feel like some subjective explanations would benefit all.

I'll go :

Werner Herzog :
Underneath the bleakness of his overall aesthetic is an incredible look at life and mankind. I find his documentaries more interesting then his fictions, but here are some of my favorite regardless :

Stroszek (what a final scene)
Grizzly Man (The perfect Herzog film)
Lessons Of Darkness (Gorgeous and terrible)
Nosferatu (The sadness of the vampire)

I like horrors of a certain type. Ben Wheatley has directed a few good ones, back a few years ago. Gareth Tunley also directed a really good British horror (The Ghoul) and I'm definitely going to watch what he does next.

Hitchcock. Anything Hitchcock.

I reckon that John Cassavetes' work is too often overlooked. Especially his masterpiece 'Gloria'.
