i still stand by what i said eight years ago. no one else really fits the above description.
it also depends on what you define as "better". better what? better sound quality? better technical proficiency? better creativity? better lyrics? better artistic integrity? there are a lot of 'betters' in the realm of music.
l think there are 3 bands/artists that fit that bill.
Pink Floyd have never made a dud album, their material post Roger Waters Final Cut was brilliant by any reasonable assessment. Some may argue they tapered off after their golden 70's period. l disagree. Their last album Endless River which marked their final chapter was a work of great beauty. They remain my favourite band since 1978.
Speaking of Pink Floyd. Dave Gilmour's solo output attains new heights with each and every album.
He has carved out new territory for himself and what you hear may not be what you expect.
His last two albums exhibit a warm reflectiveness that speaks of wisdom.
Thomas Gabriel Fischer (aka Tom G. Warrior) has ascended a path for nigh on forty years that shines greater brilliance with each and every chapter, he is a beacon of clear sited vision and his work reflects insights that very few attain.
Eparistera Daimones and Melana Chasmata stand as two of the most completely perfect albums ever.
Tom is the benchmark by which all others are judged in my view.
Summoning
Red Hot Chili Peppers (although I kind of have a soft spot for their early underground stuff)
Nick Cave.
