Those are problems that only a passionate music collector and cataloger can understand. I stopped worrying about the authors, composers and original artists of songs long time ago. Some info is pretty much impossible to find. I guess with black metal bands, who are often trying to remain anonymous, that can become really frustrating. I've come to the point where i have to decide whether i'll continue to accumulate partially tagged music or will spend more time studying music that i already own and stop downloading new material. Finding new music can become serious addiction. The more you have, the more you want.
i've pretty much come to the realization that if i can't find what i want in about ten minutes, it's not worth any more of my time to look for. it's nice to be as accurate as possible, but not at the expense of driving myself nuts and taking away the enjoyment of it all.
and you are correct, it can be a serious addiction. there is always something really cool out there, just waiting for you to find it.
here's something that annoys me when cataloguing: i'm doing an album which has covers songs on it and wikipedia/discogs is telling me that so-and-so #1 and so-and-so #2 wrote a particular song by the album's artist. then, either there are no links to those two people, or there is but it turns out to be two "professional" songwriters from the '60s. guys who were never a part of any band. they just wrote songs and sold them to music artists. it's no help to me when i'm attempting to find out which recording artist was the first to record the song onto an album or single. if the song is originally from before the 1900s, i just solve this by putting 'traditional cover', but if it's from the 1950s or '60s (for instance) i have to spend way too much time tracking down the original artist who recorded the song. very annoying.

i was using lime wire software to download some Hank Williams songs (i found his name in my children's encyclopedia). i downloaded bunch of them and burned my own Hank Williams compilation cd. so, i was actually listening to three hanks, thinking it's just one and wondering why does his voice change so much and why do some songs sound like crap and others normal. it wasn't until a year later when i found out hank williams was actually a son of hank williams who was a son of hank williams.
i remember lime wire. those were the days.
i'm not such a fan of Jr., but Sr. and III will always be a part of my collection.

But it's still a pain when only the first name is credited on a release.
There are, for example, currently 248 different John's in the database...

ha. i know this feeling well. there are a lot of unoriginal bands out there. usually from second and third world countries.so, did you buy the album on CD, Vinyl or digital? if it's a CD or vinyl, the band and album name should usually appear in standard print either on the spine or inside the booklet.you can always take a photo of the album cover and send it to me. i have years and years of practice deciphering Black Metal band names. it's sort of a hobby, at this point.
You should search for the catalog# often found on the spine or label side of the CD/record.There's also a 'strict' search option which sorts the different artist suffixes, see:https://www.discogs.com/search/?q=nemesis&type=artist&strict=true
thanks for the offered help, i appreciate it. to be honest, i was exaggerating a little to make it more dramatic but i do have problems with some albums.
artists with same names are annoying when i want to listen to music too. so, i want to listen to, say, 50's pop music and i tell to my music player to include songs by Jimmie Rodgers. five minutes later i hear T For Texas blasting. i even have a book in which they have mistaken the 50's pop singer with 30's country singer, no kidding. i'll attach the photo (sorry bout the glare, i took the photo right now). the text is about the "the father of country music" and they slapped the photo of 50's pop singer.
when i started my downloading career i was 13, dumb as shit and i began with country music. i was using lime wire software to download some Hank Williams songs (i found his name in my children's encyclopedia). i downloaded bunch of them and burned my own Hank Williams compilation cd. so, i was actually listening to three hanks, thinking it's just one and wondering why does his voice change so much and why do some songs sound like crap and others normal. it wasn't until a year later when i found out hank williams was actually a son of hank williams who was a son of hank williams. oh well, at least i could tag those guys with Sr, Jr and III. two jimmie rodgers' are still a problem.
what annoys me the most about band names is when there are more than 2 bands with the same name. tagging them is a pain in the ass. the worst genre in that sense is, without a question, metal. there are (allegedly) 36 bands named Nemesis, 33 named Legion, 32 Requiems, 30 Oblivions, 28 Mortuaries and 27 Genocides. so, i buy a Nemesis album, the album title is, of course, impossible to read because they love to fuck around with their fonts. i search for the band on discogs, get this result:https://www.discogs.com/search/?q=nemesis&type=artistand there goes my entire evening.
