If you’ve been blocked the chat will no longer appear amongst your messages and you won’t be able to visit the profile, but the same can be said if the other user has deleted their profile. I don’t think it’s possible to delete conversations.
I wouldn’t worry mate, they were probably a cunt anyway.

Thanks for your comments. I didn't realise that whether messages are marked as "read" when a notification email is opened, depends on your email provider / images. That explains a few things! However, this being the case, the current notification system is, as you say, unreliable.

May I make a suggestion? A few years ago I was a member of a dating site which used to send a notification email whenever a new message was received, but the email did not include any of the content of the message, nor did it give details of who the message was from. It simply said something like "You have received a new message. To find out who it is from and to read it, please log in to your account". Therefore the sender of the message would know that there was no way that the recipient could have read the message without logging in to the site. Then when the recipient logged in and read the message, it was marked as "read" on the sender's "messages" page.

Another way of doing this is to set up a system similar to the above, but to include the message sender's name in the notification email but still not include any of the message content, i.e. "You have received a new message from.....(insert name of sender). To read it, please log in to your account". That way, the recipient would know who had sent the message (and therefore have the option of ignoring it if they wanted to) but they would still have to log in if they actually wanted to read the message! I understand that a lot of dating / friendship sites operate in this way.

You have confused me now! Are you saying that you are not sure whether or not what scared_of_feet said is right?? I personally would have thought it unlikely that when a message is read via a notification email (without logging in to the site), it would then show as "read" to the sender....how could that happen if the recipient has not logged in at all?? But if I'm right and messages still show as "unread" until the recipient has actually logged in and clicked on them, then we really have no idea whether someone has read our messages or not, which means that the whole feature is unreliable!

As scared_of_feet rightly says, other sites (such as Facebook) still give you a notification when you log in, telling you that there is a new message, even if you have already read the message via an email from the site. However, just because Tastebuds does not do this, that still does not mean that the sender of the message will know that you have read it....even though it shows on your own homepage that you have no new messages, it may still show on the sender's that the message is unread. The "blue dot" next to a sent message (in the "sent messages" list) becomes a "grey dot"
when the message is read, but surely this cannot happen without the recipient of the message logging in to the site?!

Claire, if you go to someone's profile and there is no option to message them, then they have blocked you,. I know this because I have been blocked by someone for some reason - I sent them a message, they replied, so I was looking at their profile again with the intention of writing to them again to continuie the conversation, but I couldn't see the button for sending a message, so I went back to the message thread in my inbox, where rather than having a box for me to write a new message, it said "sorry, this user has blocked you from contacting them". I haven't blocked anyone myself, but as far as this person goes - I can still see their profile, just not message them. Their updates still show up on the feed on my homepage when I log in.

And also, I believe that if you read your message in your email notification, without logging into your Tastebuds account, it still shows up as being read because when you then do log in to your account, no new message notification pops up, whereas with a site like Facebook, it still would... If that makes sense! :)
